15. Modal Verbs: Volere, Potere, Dovere — Complete Guide

Modal verbs (i verbi servili) express desire, ability, or obligation. They are followed directly by an infinitive verb without any preposition in between! All three modal verbs are irregular.

Volere (To want)

io voglio
tu vuoi
lui/lei vuole
noi vogliamo
voi volete
loro voglionoo

Potere (To be able / Can)

io posso
tu puoi
lui/lei può
noi possiamo
voi potete
loro possono

Dovere (To have to / Must)

io devo
tu devi
lui/lei deve
noi dobbiamo
voi dovete
loro devono

💡 Polite Requests (Vorrei): When ordering food or making requests, instead of saying "Io voglio" (which sounds too direct/blunt), use the polite conditional form Vorrei ("I would like"): "Vorrei un cornetto e un caffè, per favore."
