Choosing between the Passato Prossimo and the Imperfetto is one of the most critical skills to master at the B1 level. They are often used together in the same sentence to tell a story.

L\'Imperfetto (The Background)

Use the imperfetto to describe the "setting of the stage". It answers the question: "What were things like? What was happening?"

• Descriptions in the past: Weather, age, physical appearance, feelings, state of mind. (Faceva freddo. Ero triste.)
• Habits and repeated actions: Things you "used to do" regularly. (Da bambino, andavo sempre al mare.)
• Ongoing actions: Actions that were in progress when something else happened. (Mentre mangiavo...)

Il Passato Prossimo (The Action)

Use the passato prossimo for the main events that advance the timeline. It answers the question: "What happened then?"

• Completed, specific events: Actions with a clear beginning and end. (Ieri sono andato a Roma.)
• Interruptions: The action that interrupts the ongoing "imperfetto" background. (Mentre mangiavo, è squillato il telefono.)
• Changes in state: A sudden change in feeling or condition. (Ho avuto paura - I got scared.)
