Reported Speech & Tense Backshifting

When reporting what someone said in the past (using verbs like disse, ha detto, spiegò), the verb tenses in the reported clause must shift back in time (La Concordanza dei Tempi).

Tense Shifting Rules

• Presente → Imperfetto: "Lavoro" → Ha detto che lavorava.
• Passato Prossimo → Trapassato Prossimo: "Ho mangiato" → Ha detto che aveva mangiato.
• Futuro Semplice → Condizionale Passato: "Verrò" → Ha detto che sarebbe venuto.
